Port-au-Prince was built between mountains and the sea as a strategic deterrent to piracy in the 18th century, but that location also makes it vulnerable to natural disasters. Haiti lies along a major fault line and has experienced major earthquakes in the past. Katz explores the myriad reasons for the widespread destruction. International rescue teams arrive too late to save most of the victims. Haitians scramble to dig survivors out of the rubble. Touring the wreckage of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, Katz finds overwhelming devastation, including a crumbling National Palace and streets littered with bodies. Katz, on assignment there, escapes the severely damaged AP residence with the help of his Haitian "fixer," Evens Sanon. On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake rocks the island nation of Haiti.
